Event info for:

Build connections abroad in your own back yard as a Country Liaison

If you are friendly, outgoing, and enjoy meeting people from different countries, perhaps you would like to volunteer as a Country Liaison. This is an exciting and rewarding volunteer position, as you get to make new international friends by welcoming a team to Nova Scotia.

As a Country Liaison, you can use your metropolitan experience to help the team  get familiar with the city. Since you live here, you probably know plenty of useful tips for a visiting team. They might want to know what attractions they should see while they’re in town or where a good restaurant is for a team dinner.

A Country Liaison gives the team leader information about Canoe ’09. Mary Hart-Baker, our Country Liaison Coordinator will be available to help you with any tough questions, but there will also be a training session before you meet your team that will explain everything you need to know about the event. You will also get to meet with other Country Liaisons and volunteers at the training session.

Speaking another language or being familiar with the sport is not a requirement for being a Country Liaison. If you don’t know much about paddling, I’m sure the athletes that you will welcome will be more than happy to fill you in. Most teams have someone who knows some English, but Country Liaisons are often needed to help bridge language barriers. If you do have experience with another language, let us know and we can put that to good use.

This volunteer position does not require you to be with the team for the entire week. Canoe ’09 and the country’s team leader will have your contact information so you can be reached when needed. Either in person or by phone, Country Liaisons should be available from August 10 to 17.

This is sure to be a rewarding opportunity, and you never know what friendships might come out of it. At the 1997 Canoe World Championships, our country liaison for the Czech Republic became such good friends with his team that he took a trip to Europe to visit them.

As you can see becoming a Country Liaison is a great opportunity to get involved with Canoe ’09 while welcoming a team to our city. To sign up, click on “Volunteers” on our website and register for “Special Events/Volunteers/Protocols – Liaison” on our database.

I have lived in Metro most of my life. My career as a REALTOR(R) not only provides the opportunity to be available for the entire period of the Regatta it also gives me a knowledge of all areas of Metro.
I am excited about participating in the regatta. Working as a Country Liaison should be a positive experience.
    Cheers
