Exciting races, entertainment, weather drew big crowds to Canoe ‘09

Tens of thousands of people came out to Lake Banook for the 2009 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships.

For the four days of competition, the warm weather and flat-calm water were ideal for racing. Thousands of spectators cheered on the fastest paddlers in the world as they raced on the Bell Aliant Racing Centre on Lake Banook and enjoyed the festival on Prince Albert Road. (more…)

Hosting the 2009 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships has its economic benefits

The upcoming 2009 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships will create an estimated $10 million in economic spinoffs, including 260 jobs.

“Anytime you see a major international event being held in a city it usually gives a significant boost to the local economy,” says Valerie Payn, president and CEO, Halifax Chamber of Commerce. “Athletes and spectators visit local businesses and the preparation for the event means jobs for contractors.” (more…)

City Park transformed into Athlete’s Village for Canoe ’09

A popular park in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia has been transformed into an athlete’s village for the 2009 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships, presented by Bell Aliant.

More than 70 countries, will be using Birch Cove Park, on Lake Banook, as a staging area during the championships. (more…)

Team Canada - Airport Welcome

Members of Canada’s World Championship team will arrive in Nova Scotia this Sunday for the 2009 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships, August 12 to 16 at the Bell Aliant Racing Centre on Lake Banook in Dartmouth. CanoeKayak Canada will hold a news conference for the Canadian Team competing at the 2009 ICF World Sprint Canoe Championships on Tuesday August 11 at 1:00 p.m. The World Championships take place in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia from August 12-16, 2009.

Paddlers still trying for chance to race in Worlds on home water

The crunch is on for Canadian paddlers trying to secure a position on the home team at the 2009 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships. The event is being held at the Bell Aliant Racing Centre on Lake Banook in Dartmouth from August 12 to 16. Some athletes have already secured spots on the team after winning events at National Team Trials 2 on Lake Banook last weekend.

Eight local paddlers one step closer to the World Championships on Lake Banook

Eight Nova Scotian paddlers were named to Canada’s International Tour team after the first set of National Team Trials in Welland, Ontario.

Kayakers Jillian D’Alessio, Shaun Fair, Karen Furneaux, Lyall Hatton, Una Lounder, Genevieve Orton and Connor Taras along with canoer Andrew Russell will join the 32-member Canadian team travelling to Europe later this month to compete at World Cup events in Poznan, Poland and Szeged, Hungary.
